Hope for the Journey
I came across a great quote the other day that got me thinking. The quote came from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and it goes as follows: "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy." These words challenged my heart and got me thinking about whom and what should define us in our everyday walk whether it is good times or not so good times.
The very next day God drew me to Joshua, Chapter One to give me clear direction on how I should stand and live this life. As I studied this passage, I received such encouragement from the Lord. No matter what I am dealing with or how discouraged I may be, His Word reignites my passion for what He has called me to do with my life.
In this passage of scripture, the Lord gives us an incredible map for life with three coordinates that can give us hope for the journey.
1. Be strong and take courage: We have His promise. –Joshua 1:6
2. Be strong and take courage: We have His Word. – Joshua 1: 7-8
3. Be strong and take courage: We have His presence. – Joshua 1:9
First, God promises strength, courage, and to make a way for us if we will run to Him. Next, He also gives us His Word as the Psalmist declares in Psalm 119:105 as "a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."
Finally, He makes an incredible promise in Joshua 1:9 which declares:"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be discouraged; for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go."Earlier in Joshua 1:5, He told Joshua "just as I have been with Moses, I will be with you."
In our fast paced world, we all need a map to give us the right direction or we can get twisted and turned and moving in directions that are not good for us. The first chapter of Joshua gives us strong direction for our daily lives. I do not know what you may be facing today but I pray the truth of Joshua will encourage and stir your heart like it has mine.
I praise God today that we can take heart because through Him we can be strong and courageous!
