A Heart for God

September 20, 2013
By Rev. Rick Calloway

Last week, I began to share with you a strategy entitled “TRAIN” for guiding us in raising Godly children. This week I would like to provide you with the “R” portion of “TRAIN”.  This portion stands for training our kids to have a heart and reverence for God and to build in them a foundation of honor and respect.

King Solomon, on his deathbed, told us in Proverbs 4:23 “To guard our hearts for out of it come all the issues of life.” Solomon also told us in Ecclesiastes 12:13 to “Fear God, and keep His commandments; for this is the whole duty of man.”

God is teaching from these passages how important it is for us to guard our hearts so that our hearts will be turned towards God, and to build into our lives a fear and reverence for God. As parents, this is the lifestyle that we must model for our children so that we can guide them in this same pursuit.

The Bible tells us in Luke 2:52 that Jesus grew up into adulthood by pursuing wisdom, stature, favor with man, and favor with God. What better way for us to follow the pattern for how Jesus was raised for our children than to model and instruct our children to have a heart for God and reverence for Him.

I am convinced that the greatest legacy we can leave our children is to model for them daily how much we love God and desire to please Him. From there, we must help them as Solomon admonished to guard their hearts daily from the destructive culture that we live in. I pray that these passages will be a blessing to you as you point your children towards God.

Also, I look forward to hearing feedback from our parents in the coming weeks through our new Parent Roundtable and our annual Coffee. Your feedback is so crucial to us in helping us to make continual improvements in our program. You will also be receiving information shortly about our annual parent survey that will take place in October.

The Cornerstone Annual Fund Kick off is beginning next week and I will be sharing in a separate email next week our focus in fundraising this year. I am so excited about all that God has put on our hearts in improving our school and providing more opportunities for our students.

Finally, all I can say about Spiritual Emphasis Week in the Upper School with evangelist Frank Shelton is Wow! God moved so mightily amongst our students and staff! To Him be all the glory for what took place this week.
