School Update

April 11, 2014
By Rev. Rick Calloway

I wanted to take the opportunity as we near the Easter break to give you an update on things we are working on for next year. First, I want to say thank you for all of your support for the Booster Fun Run this past February. We have ordered equipment for the playground that should be here in the coming weeks. Through your generosity, we were able to order one of the major playground pieces and three smaller units that will greatly enhance our playgrounds.

We have also enhanced our Early Education playgrounds with the areas we have developed behind the classrooms with turf and new equipment. In addition, we are currently working on the development of a new indoor playground space that we hope to open this summer.

Next, our administrative team has been busy planning for many technology upgrades for the coming school year. In the fall, we will be adding mobile iPad labs for lower and middle school use. Teachers in all grades will also be equipped with iPads to further integrate technology in the classroom. In the high school, students will be using their own devices in the classroom for some use of e-textbooks and for use with MOODLE. MOODLE is a software tool that will prepare students for their college experience by allowing them to test, submit work, and obtain all assignments online. MOODLE or similar systems are currently used in most college environments.

We will also be augmenting our foreign language program in the lower and middle school through our technology labs and with the introduction of units that will teach not only language but also the culture of the language they will study. Furthermore, our faculty is working hard on updating and enhancing all curriculum guides to ensure that we optimize student performance in all disciplines.

Finally, I pray that you and your family will have a blessed Easter break. If you do not have a church home, I would love to invite to worship with us here at First Baptist on Easter weekend. We have five opportunities that weekend that I want to make you aware of. Our traditional service times are at 8:00 a.m., 9:30 a.m., and 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, April 20th. Our church also offers a modern service called the Lift, which will have a Saturday night Easter service on April 19th at 6 p.m. and a Sunday morning service at 9:30 a.m. on the 20th. The Lift meets in the Family Life Center. The theme this year is “Who Cares?...God”. We would love to have you and I promise you will come away blessed!
