Real Power

May 02, 2014
By Rev. Rick Calloway

Life can be so frustrating at times. There are days when we all face problems that seem so overwhelming to us. Our first reaction is usually to try and fix things on our own. I have been a Christian for a long time and I can honestly say that one of my greatest struggles along the way has been learning to live in real power and not defeat because of the trials and issues that come our way.

Romans 8:8 tells us that “those who are in the flesh cannot please God.” In other words, there is a better chance of me sprouting wings and flying than there is of me living in the Christian life in my own power. It is simply impossible. That truth in verse eight is as plain as it gets yet there are those times I get hard headed and try to do things my own way.

Verses 9-11 of that same chapter give us a much better alternative. These verses advise us: “But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if any man has not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by His Spirit that dwells in you.”

I pray that you will not miss the significance of these verses. Paul is saying that the same power that raised Jesus from the grave is in you if you are a believer! My desire is that we will post these verses somewhere prominent so that we can remind ourselves daily that we need no longer to try and live the Christian life in our own power but rely on the greatest power that the world has ever seen that lives within us. We need to be reminded that the Holy Spirit of God is working daily in us to produce His righteousness in us.

We live sometimes in such a pressure cooker it seems. I pray that the truth from this passage will help to daily relieve some of that pressure when it starts to encircle you. God sent His Son to die on a cruel cross so that we can live in victory instead of defeat! Real power is available to us today as the children of God!

On another note, school is quickly winding down and I want to invite you to be a part of two great end of the year opportunities. First, Senior Baccalaureate is May 20th at 6:30 p.m. in the sanctuary. Lt. Governor Dan Forest will be with us that night as we honor our seniors and more importantly the Lord. Also, Senior Graduation is set for May 30th at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary. Motivational speaker Gail McWilliams will be our commencement speaker. She recently was a part of Liberty University’s Convocation week. Even if you do not have a senior, I promise you will come away blessed by attending as you see the marvelous things that the Lord is doing at our school.
