The Value of Christian Education

January 09, 2015
By Rev. Rick Calloway

“Education without values, as useful as it is, seems rather to make man a more clever devil.” -C. S. Lewis

Our children will spend almost 16,000 hours in school from Kindergarten through 12th grade. During that same timeframe, our children have the potential to be in church 676 hours if they attend one hour every week for 13 years. When you look at the time spent in each of these areas, you will quickly realize the impact that education has on a child. Our children are spending more time each day with their teachers when they are awake than with us as their parents.

Jesus said in Luke 6:40 that “the student will become like the teacher.” 16,000 hours of education will have a considerable impact on your child and the kind of person they will become. Education will help define your child’s worldview. Martin Luther made an incredible statement about education long before our country took prayer out of school. Luther declared:

“I am afraid that the schools will prove the very gates of hell, unless they diligently labor in explaining the Holy Scriptures and engraving them in the heart of the youth.”

If we are to raise Godly kids, a Christian education will play a major role in that pursuit. My wife, Karen, and I made the commitment when our first child was born to provide our children with a Christian education and to ensure that our children would be daily exposed to a Biblical worldview.

I am convinced that it is important that we as parents intentionally plan to give our kids a Christian education and trust God that it will indeed be the right way to go. Scripture confirms that education with the Bible as its source of truth will make a difference in your child’s life.

One such promise is found in Isaiah 55:11: “So shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; It shall not return to me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.” My prayer has always been that that the truth of this verse would be a reality for my children because I have centered their education on the Bible. As the parent of children who are grown, I have been blessed to see the Word prosper in the lives of my kids. From this blessing, I can tell you today that providing a Christian education for my children has been the single greatest investment of my life.

At Metrolina, we seek daily to partner with you our parents in providing a distinctive Biblical education to your children. We appreciate the financial sacrifice you make to provide a Christian education for your kids and we are committed to working hard each day to honor that sacrifice.

Re-enrollment begins this week at MCA and I encourage you to secure your child’s spot for next year. Interest in MCA is very high as evidenced by our open houses and I do not want you to lose your spot when we open to the public in a few weeks.

We treasure our families and the community of Metrolina!
