Three Ways to Protect Ourselves and Our Children from This Destructive Culture

By Rev. Rick Calloway

“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” Romans 12:2

I am convinced that one of the dangers that we face today in Christianity is that of becoming too much like the world and not like Christ. The culture we live in is working hard to mold us and our children into its image. We see how this culture is using areas such as television and social media to attempt to transform our thinking. Even many churches today have abandoned elements of Biblical truth in order to be more cool and relevant to our culture.

How can we protect ourselves and our families from the effects of this culture and lead our families to be more like Christ? Romans 12:2 gives us three ways to do this.

1. We must not copy the customs and behavior of this culture.

Do others know that we are Christians by our lifestyle or do we simply fit into this culture?

2. We must allow Him to transform us.

Have we given our hearts completely to living for God and loving Him or is chasing the American dream our focus?

3. We need to allow God to change our thinking.

Has the world’s definition of success kept us from God’s design for our lives? Is modeling a Godly lifestyle for our children a priority for us? Do our kids see us studying God’s Word? Do our kids see us pray? Better yet, do we pray with them?

Following the truth of Romans 12:2 will cause us to be looked upon differently by the world. Many will not understand this different way of thinking and will consider our path foolish. However, Romans 12:2 tells us that if we will do these three things then we will find God’s will for our lives. Not only will we discover His will, but we will also discover a peace and contentment that God alone brings to our lives.

I read something Dr. Billy Graham said a few years back that illustrates the truth of Romans 12:2. Dr. Graham declared: “The men who followed Jesus were unique in their generation. They turned the world upside down because their hearts had been turned right side up. The world has never been the same."

I pray that as we live out the truth of Romans 12:2 our world will never be the same!
