A Commitment to Success

“Commit your actions to the Lord, and your plans will  succeed.” Proverbs 16:3

There have been many books written on how to achieve success in this life. Many of these books give you ways to improve who you are and what you are doing all with the idea of  making a person rich and famous. I know that material wealth and worldly success are not enough to satisfy a person’s deepest needs and desires. At the heart of every person is the need for peace in our hearts and a knowledge that we are making a difference.

God has a purpose and a plan for our lives that is much bigger than achieving the world’s definition of success. God desires that we commit our lives and our actions to Him on a daily basis. In essence, God is calling us as Christians to live for a purpose that is so much bigger than who we are. I believe with all of my heart that giving our kids a transcendent purpose or living for something bigger than themselves (God) is the greatest thing we can teach them.

We spend so much time in our lives making plans and planning for the future. We do the same with our children as we are focused on helping them to achieve success in life. There is nothing inherently wrong with that idea.

However, I believe that Proverbs 16:3 gives us a better way to approach life and planning. Instead of spending so much time on planning, this verse I think is challenging us to spend more time on finding God’s purpose for our lives and then committing all of our actions to His glory.

I ran across a quote that illustrates this idea so well. Myles Munroe said: “God's purpose is more important than our plans.” Finding God’s purpose for our lives will meet the greatest needs of our life in finding the peace and hope that people desperately seek. More than that, it will bring a sense of satisfaction that money and worldly success will never provide.

In fact, Proverbs 16:3 tells us that if we commit our actions to the Lord then our plans will succeed.

What is the success here that is being referred to? I believe that it is a Godly success that is characterized by fruits of the Spirit such as love, joy, peace, contentment and so much more that only God can give.

When we commit our lives and actions to God, everything about our lives will change. I meet so many people who are tired and discouraged from the rat race of life and in trying to find success. Proverbs 16:3 is showing us a different way to live. Who does not want to find success?

The greatest thing about committing our actions to the Lord is that it is the only way to gain a success that is lasting. God sent His Son Jesus so that we may experience life to the fullest not only in this lifetime but also in the eternity that is to come!

I pray that Proverbs 16:3 will encourage you today and also inspire you to make a commitment to success God’s way.
