If Only We Saw it Coming
“Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.” Corrie Ten Boom
There have been times in my life like this one and I am sure yours too where we wish we could have known certain things were going to happen so we could have been better prepared. One of those times for me came in 2006 when I learned very suddenly without warning that my dad was very sick and would not live much longer. I would have given anything to have more time to better prepared myself but that was not in the Lord’s timing.
Through that time, I was reminded over and over again that God can be trusted. I also was reminded during those days that my hope and source of strength was God. Through my dad’s sickness and death, I came to trust and love God more than ever before even though I never saw it coming.
We all have these feelings at one time or another in life of wanting to know what is coming but God's Word reminds us that we cannot know everything and that instead we need to learn to trust God and begin to live in the hope that only He can bring. I have come to realize that if my hope is based on earthly treasures and knowledge, then I am going to experience one disappointment after another.
The apostle Paul reminded us in the book of Romans that when we wait on God and live according to His timetable we will have hope.
Romans 5:3-5 declares: "We also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us."
These verses remind me that we are going to experience changes and trials but God is still there loving us along the way and giving us a hope that will never disappoint as the apostle Paul says.
I am convinced that God would have us to daily seek and trust Him. Specifically, I believe that God wants us to call upon Him not only when the bottom falls out but also daily for guidance, for direction, and for hope before we do anything else. David Jeremiah, a great pastor and author, once said that "we pray when there's nothing else we can do, but Jesus wants us to pray before we do anything at all."
We are never going to see every difficulty ahead of time or be prepared for all uncertainties but we can trust God with our future, our lives, and more importantly with our eternal destiny. I pray that we would all as Corrie Ten Boom said “never be afraid to trust” our great God with what may be just around the corner.
