Instruction You Never Forget

“These were his instructions to them: “You must always act in the fear of the Lord, with faithfulness and an undivided heart.”

2 Chronicles 19:9

I am so grateful to God for giving me two of the Godliest and most loving parents a child could ever ask for. They gave me a lot of instruction and much of it I have never forgotten. I will always remember a very powerful lesson that my mother taught me when I was about 5 years old.

This lesson occurred on vacation when my mother had taken me down to the ocean for a swim. We had to cross a very busy street on foot. My mother instructed me to hold her hand and to not move until she told me to. On that day, I was barefoot having just come from the beach. My feet began to hurt fiercely from the heat to the point that I could not stand waiting any longer. Immediately, I let go of my mother’s hand and darted across the street. I narrowly avoided being hit by a car. Looking back, I know that my protection that day was the providence of God.

I know that I had scared my mother to death. However, my mother’s emotions quickly swung from relief that I was not hurt to anger at me for disobeying. I got a spanking that I will never forget but I also got instruction that has lasted me a lifetime. My mother shared with me then and since then how much she loves me and how important it is that I obey. That incident taught me how important it is to hold on to what is important and always act a certain way. It taught the importance of obedience and faithfulness. I have never forgotten the lessons of that day.

In 2 Chronicles 19, King Jehosophat went about giving instruction to his people that he knew would serve them well. The King gave three instructions in verse nine of that chapter to his people. These three instructions are:
  1. Always act in the fear of the Lord
  2. Be faithful
  3. Have an undivided heart

You see, once we learn to fear the Lord then we must daily act in that manner. It is not enough to say that I fear the Lord and be done with the statement. We must daily be in His Word and spend time with Him so that we will always act in the fear of the Lord. If we take in God’s Word daily and allow it to permeate our lives, it will change the way we act. God can change us to the point that we will “always act in the fear of the Lord.”

Next, we are instructed to be faithful. As I mentioned earlier, a healthy fear of my mother helped me in the future to learn to be faithful to what she asked me to do. It was fear that was birthed out of love for her. The same holds true of our relationship with God. When we learn to fear Him, we will love Him so much that we will desire to be faithful.

Finally, the fear of the Lord and a love for the Lord will lead us to where we can have an undivided heart. The instruction from King Jehosophat is clear. We are to have an undivided heart so that our passion, our loyalty, our love, and our devotion are to God and God alone. King Jehosophat’s instructions are so powerful. I pray that these will be instructions that we will never forget.
