EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY STATEMENT

Metrolina Christian Academy believes that the Bible is the inspired, infallible word of God; the source of absolute truth through which a biblical worldview is formed and the standard for living. Christian Education is a comprehensive educational program where all disciplines are taught through the lens of scripture.

MCA employs teachers who have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and provide developmentally appropriate activities that align with the school’s mission. We work with our families to provide an educational setting that nurtures each student’s spiritual, academic, physical, and emotional development. Our desire is to prepare students for the 21st century, and to send them out on mission for the kingdom of God.

Learning Management System

Learning Management Systems are not the future for education they are the present, as blended learning is a best practice instructional strategy. In response to this educational advancement and in alignment with our technology strategic plan, we are excited to announce MCA high school students will begin utilizing the Renweb LMS during the 2018/2019 school year.  Renweb fully integrates our current student information system with the new learning management system streamlining our technology in a more efficient and effective manner. The high school students will be taught how to utilize their calendar, access unit information, and various resources all through the Renweb site. This innovative instructional advancement is due to your partnership and support of MCA.

Spanish - Total Physical Response Method

MCA Spanish Teachers experienced training on a methodology proven to be best practice in language development. Language learning is most successful when students are asked to interact and respond (verbally and non-verbally). TPR (Total Physical Response) is a language teaching strategy that incorporates the use of verbal, visual, and physical interactions. Methods such as storytelling and command & response are used often to introduce vocabulary and enhance comprehension. MCA is excited to implement this instructional technique in all levels of our program.

STEAM

S.T.E.A.M. provides students the freedom to create without fear of failure and amazing things happen. Through cultivation of student’s talents and passions, MCA STEAM will provide real experiences that inspires them to go deeper in critical thinking and cognitive development. Located in our STEAM Studio modular, the Maker Space allows students to identify, acknowledge, investigate, brainstorm, develop, create, experiment, fail and try again through problem solving in the areas of science, technology, engineering, art and math, by means of inquiry-based open-ended activities. STEAM Studio is a place for MCA students to flourish and get excited about learning.

Digital Citizenship is also included in the STEAM curriculum, and in our homeroom classes. Through these lessons students learn about their digital footprint, media balance, cyberbullying, internet safety and online privacy at an age appropriate level. We assess our curriculum of digital citizenship through Common Sense Media, an online resource for teachers and families. “Media and technology are at the very center of all our lives today -- especially our children’s.  Kids today spend over 50 hours of screen time every week. The media content they consume and create has a profound impact on their social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development.  Learning how to use media and technology wisely is an essential skill for life and learning in the 21st century.” -Common Sense Media

English - Flash Fiction

Flash Fiction is an example of innovation and creativity in the field of education regarding narrative writing. MCA high school English students will begin utilizing this writing methodology through their unit on mythology as they will write a flash fiction myth to tell a story with action and dialogue. The flash fiction method guides students to develop a strong protagonist with a unique plot line so that the flash fiction encompasses a story arc with an inciting incident, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. MCA is excited to have an incredible English department who brings the latest educational methods to implement a strong curriculum.

Educational Objectives

1.  SPIRITUAL “Let the Word of God dwell in you richly” (Col. 3:16)

Students will be encouraged to make a personal commitment to Jesus Christ; to follow Christ daily, reflect Christ-like character, and pursue knowledge of scripture.

2.  ACADEMIC “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.” (Phil. 2:5)

Students will be taught skills in the core subject areas of critical reading, mathematics, science, and history as well as enrichment educational opportunities in fine arts, technology, physical education, and the Spanish language.

3.  SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL “No man liveth unto himself” (Romans 14:7a)

Students will be taught respect and concern for family and friends as well as the value found in living in harmonious community with others.  

4.  PHYSICAL “Present your bodies a living sacrifice…unto God” (Romans 12:1)

Students will be taught methods to improve their coordination, muscle tone, and endurance; as well as desirable habits in the care of the body and to respect their bodies body as a temple of the Holy Spirit.
