Curriculum & Instruction

MCA’s Lower School provides each child with opportunities to explore the world of ideas that God has created for them while being encouraged in a loving and Christ-centered atmosphere. Teachers are committed to understanding the design of each child so they can adequately prepare the instructional strategies to meet individual learning styles. Various teaching methods are implemented in the classroom to create a lively and engaging environment where learning and fun often go hand-in-hand. Noteworthy:

Metrolina Christian Academy’s Lower School division serves students in Kindergarten through fifth grade.
K – 4th grade learn in self-contained classrooms while fifth grade utilizes a team-teaching approach.
Average Class Size:
- 1:16 (K)
- 1:21 (1st – 5th)
- K – 2nd grade classrooms have teacher assistants supporting them throughout the day.
Special events in the Lower School calendar are Missions Week, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Feast, Christmas Celebration, Grandparents’ Day, and Field Day to name just a few.
The Academic Support Program provides tiered levels of student support.
Learning Enrichment Activities Program (LEAP) is designed to challenge gifted learners.
The IOWA achievement test and Cognitive Abilities Test are administered in the spring of each year.

Programs

E432

E432 is a program for lower school students where each child is encouraged to live out Ephesians 4:32 “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” As we partner with families, students will be recognized when they demonstrate a Christ-like heart filled with compassion, courage, friendship, and forgiveness. In the classroom, teachers will reinforce these traits through a weekly biblically-integrated character building program. The heart of E432 is to encourage students and nurture their spiritual, social, and emotional well-being as they grow in their relationship with the Lord and build relationships within our school community.

LEAP (Learning Enrichment Activities Program)

LEAP (Learning Enrichment Activities Program) is our gifted enrichment program offered to 3rd - 5th grade students who demonstrate high performance on both cognitive abilities test and achievement tests. LEAP is designed to develop critical thinking skills that relate to real world scenarios. In the LEAP classroom, there is an extension of curriculum and instruction so learning will challenge our gifted learners.

Our lower school students pray for missionaries as they learn about different cultures around the world within their classrooms, through messages from guest speakers, and during events like Missions Week. Throughout the year, students will explore the beauty and diversity of God’s Kingdom and pray for those who are ministering to the people living in other countries.

Reading Buddies

Staff members, volunteers, and older students are paired with younger readers for one-on-one time to inspire a love of reading as they travel through books together. In addition to the academic benefits, our Reading Buddies program promotes differentiation in reading, supports social and emotional development, encourages cooperative learning, and enriches our school community.

Teach to Equip

Teach to Equip is MCA's strategic and intentional plan to equip students with a Biblical Worldview through the curriculum utilized, instructional methodology implemented, and professional development training provided to instructional staff. Teach to Equip includes professional development, which is designed to foster and promote growth, improvement, learning in the areas of curriculum, instructional methods, assessments, social and emotional learning, and biblical integration.
